CRJS 222: The Hurricane

"Any two will do?"     Some comments on the movie:

There has been controversy regarding how truthful The Hurricane actually was. There were some ebellishments and omissions by Hollywood. For instance, there was no racist detective intent on keeping Mr. Carter behind bars. This was purely fictitious.

Whether truth or fiction, the movie shows mistakes made in the criminal justice system and humanizes the procedures we will learn about this semester in class.

Assuming events as shown in the movie are accurate, think about what it means for the criminal justice system. Think about the police detective, racial profiling, and due process rights. Is the criminal justice system as unfair today as it was portrayed to have been in the 1960s?

Did you know that Rubin Carter was wrongfully arrested again in 1996?
Rubin now lives in Toronto and works with the Association in Defense for the Wrongfully Convicted. Lesra is a lawyer in British Columbia. John Artis works in Portsmouth with troubled teens. For more information on Artis, click here.
